Travel sketches of a space that captured my imagination as a student. The Aachener Dom was where Charlemagne held his court and where he imagined the recreation of the Roman empire. I am not so interested in recreating the world of the Romans, but I am interested in the conviction of imagination. To draw is to exercise the imagination. The more we pay attention to detail, dimension and the character of space the better we are prepared to call on those faculties when we design the unseen. I imagined that Mies Van der Rohe would visit the same place as a student and contemplate architecture, building, design, culture and societal ambition. This imagined idea may be a fiction but it helped to sustain my travels alone before starting to practice architecture.
